THE FIFTEENTH ANNUAL ALABAMA LANDOWNER AND TREASURE CONFERENCE IS MARCH 4-5

AUBURN, Feb. 26---The Fifteenth Annual Alabama Landowner and TREASURE Forest Conference is set for March 4-5 in Mobile.

The conference benefits forest landowners with an interest in conservation by providing them with technical information on how to better manage their forestland. It also offers an opportunity for landowners and those who work in the field of forestry to meet each other and share knowledge and experiences.

The first day of the conference will be at the Mobile Clarion. Educational session topics scheduled for the afternoon include: herbicide recipes for tough vegetation problems, perspectives on the future demand for solid wood vs fiber, getting the most out of genetically improved seedlings, considerations before constructing a pond, and others.

Outstanding TREASURE Forest landowners and county forestry planning committees will be honored at a banquet on Thursday night.

Friday, conference participants will take a tour of several sites near Mobile, with specific emphasis on the longleaf pine ecosystem. One tour site, the Malone TREASUREForest, offers an opportunity for attendees to step back in time. The forest blends modern timber and wildlife management practices with old-fashioned principles. A replica of a turn-of-the-century homestead will be center of activities and will show how people lived before modern amenities were available. "Neighbors Helping Neighbors" will be the theme, with a smokehouse, syrup cooker, springhouse, quilting, candle-making and wash-pot canning on display.

Anyone interested in attending the conference should contact Fran Whitaker, Alabama Forestry Association, 555 Alabama St., Montgomery, AL 36104 or call (334) 265-8733.
