Diabetes Conference April 1 and 2 in Montgomery

Auburn, March 8, 2004---The Alabama Cooperative Extension System is sponsoring its third 
annual Diabetes Conference April 1 and 2 at the Governors House Hotel and Conference Center in 
Montgomery.  The theme for this year’s conference is “Reversing Diabetes and Obesity Trends in 
Alabama Through the Promotion of Lifestyle Changes.”
	
"The two-day event will provide a wealth of updated information on diabetes and childhood obesity 
helpful to all health care providers, county agents and others dealing with people with diabetes and 
obesity," said Dr. Evelyn Crayton,  Extension assistant director, family and community programs.
	
Unfortuantely, Alabama ranks number one nationwide in number of  diabetes cases, and the state 
facing a childhood obesity epidemic.  
       
“Through education, we hope to help people who are diabetic and those who love them learn to 
manage this chronic condition,” Crayton said.  “The conference will also focus on childhood obesity 
and some strategies for its prevention. “
       
Workshops will provide updates on Alabama diabetes and childhood obesity statistics, foot care, 
nutrient and drug interaction, nutrition and diet management, diabetes flu and pneumonia 
prevention, exercise and physical activity, chronic wound care, psychosocial aspects of coping with 
chronic disease and grant opportunities in obesity and diabetes.  

Important things to ask when you visit your doctor, things to do if you are sick; Medicare coverage 
of diabetes, Medicaid for children, the incidence of obesity in three Alabama county schools, 
diabetes in children and handling medical emergencies will also be discussed.  In addition, 
information will be available on organizing support groups and coalition building.
       
On-site screenings will be available for asthma, bone density, cholesterol, blood pressure and 
blood lipids. 
       
A one-hour panel discussion scheduled for Thursday night will feature Cooperative Extension 
agents from several counties who will share results of their diabetes cooking schools. 

Cost of registration for the two-day event is $120 if you register before March 17 and $150 after 
that date.  Cost includes all educational materials, meals and snacks during breaks.  For those who 
can only attend one day, registration is $90 if you register before March 17 and $100 after March 
17.
