Sea Specialties Brand Recalls Some Thin Sliced Smoked Atlantic Salmon Because of Possible Health Risk Auburn, March 23, 2004 --- Sea Specialties Inc. of Miami, Florida is recalling its 4 ounce, 8 ounce, and 16 ounce packages of Sea Specialties brand hand packed thin sliced smoked Atlantic salmon because they have the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. “Pregnant women are especially vulnerable to listeria,” said Dr. Jean Weese, a food scientist with the Alabama Cooperative Extension System. “It can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.” Weese added that healthy individuals generally suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. The recalled packages were distributed in retail stores in Alabama, Florida, Missouri, Illinois, California and Pennsylvania. The product has sell by August 30, 2004 stamped on the front or on a sticker on the back of the packages. Weese said that no illnesses have been reported so far as a result of this problem. The contamination potential was found after routine testing by the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services revealed the presence of Listeria monocytogenes in 4 ounce packages of the salmon. Consumers who have purchased the recalled 4 ounce, 8 ounce or 16 ounce, packages of the salmon are urged to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact the company at (305) 621-7600, ext.143.
