Hats Off to 4-H: Mid-Winter Retreat Feb. 20-22 
	
Auburn, Jan. 25, 2004--“Hat’s Off to 4-H is the theme of this year’s 4-H Midwinter Teen Leadership r, 
which will be held Feb. 20 through 22 at the Alabama 4-H in Columbiana. 
	
Goals for teens attending the retreat include meeting new people, learning to work as a team, learning 
valuable leadership skills and helping others through community service. 
        
Participants will make comfort caps for chemotherapy patients as part of is this year’s community service 
project.  The Pike County Sewing Guild will share their time and expertise to show 4-H’ers how to make 
the caps.
	
“Helping someone feel better is one of life’s greatest rewards,” said Molly Gregg, a 4-H specialist with the 
Alabama Cooperative Extension System. “These caps will bring comfort to many people throughout the 
state.”
	
Various workshops and games are planned for the teens to build relationships and develop skills such as  
teamwork, trust awareness, communication, negotiation, leadership and planning.   Activities will 
encourage teens to accept responsibility for being part of a team, work toward team goals, increase 
tolerance and appreciation for team diversity and increase productivity. 
       
One workshop will focus on how different personalities in a team can lead to conflict.  Participants will 
learn what team members can do to resolve the conflicts. Another activity will focus on decision-making 
and how the decisions team members make can impact a team’s ability to solve a problem.  
       
4-H’ers attending the retreat will also hear from new State 4-H Program Leader Lamar Nichols and 
inspirational speaker Bonnie Moore, a cancer survivor.
       
Midwinter Retreat  is a great time for youth across the state to come together to learn, meet new friends, 
have fun and make a difference,” said Gregg.
