P.W. Brown Retires From Extension After 31 Years of Service Auburn, Dec. 18, 2003---P. W. Brown, Extension affirmative action programming officer, will retire December 31 after 31 years of service. Brown came to Auburn in 1990 as affirmative action programming officer and the assistant to the vice president of Extension. He conducted county reviews throughout the state and advised Extension’s director on the status of affirmative action efforts in Extension programs. Prior to his work at Auburn, Brown was head of the Extension program at Tuskegee University for almost 19 years. In that capacity, he raised $50 million for 1890 colleges and Tuskegee University. While at Auburn, Brown served on several important committees, some of which were national personnel searches for Extension and Auburn University. As the Affirmative Action Programming Officer, Brown greatly enhanced the effort to monitor parity in programming and to teach field staff through the county reviews how they could better reach out to minorities in delivery of programs. “P.W. Brown’s 31 years of service are part of the almost 1,900 years of expertise that our organization and the people of Alabama are losing at the end of 2003. His accomplishments as affirmative action programming officer have made our organization a better place,” said Dr. Gaines Smith, interim director of the Alabama Cooperative Extension System. “Brown’s successes helped build the heritage of achievement on which current and future programs are built. I personally thank P.W. for his dedication to effective programs and wish him the very best in retirement,” Smith said. As for retirement, Brown says he has no special plans. “I’m just going to relax and take it easy.” A graduate of Tuskegee Institute, Brown completed his bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in agricultural education and his educational specialist degree in administration/Extension education. He did further studies at Ohio State University.
