Goddard to Speak at Urban Family Conference October 16

Normal, AL, September 3, 2002  --- Dr. Wally Goddard will be the keynote speaker at the 4th Annual Urban Family Conference on Wednesday, October 16 at the Von Braun Civic Center in downtown Huntsville, AL. Dr. Goddard, a former Alabama Cooperative Extension System family specialist, will address the theme "Strengthening Family Relationships: Models for Change."

Extension’s Urban Affairs & New Nontraditional Programs unit located on the campus of Alabama A&M University is the annual host of this event. The Family Conference is the principal medium for addressing contemporary issues in the areas of education, law, domestic violence, shared parenting, workforce preparation, health and nutrition, and resource management that affect families, including children and individuals. Continuing education units, social work contact hours and professional development units will be provided upon request.

This year’s conference activities will include the keynote address, a play entitled "We, the Family… A Family in Crisis" performed by the Bank Street Players from Decatur, Alabama, and special presentations by Dr. Marquita Davis of Lawson State Community College, Daniel G. Lord of the Alabama Security Commission, and Dr. Ruth Davis, chair of the Family and Consumer Sciences Department at Oakwood College.

"The conference will offer attendees the opportunity to discuss and gain valuable knowledge and skills on family dynamics," says Dr. Wilma Ruffin, event coordinator and Extension family and human development specialist. Discussion topics will include family relations, resource management, grandparents raising grandchildren, and key models of change for today’s urban family.

The event is open to anyone with an interest in urban families, including educators, social/case workers, family counselors, Extension agents, and clergymen.

Early bird registration on or before September 16 is $35.00 (includes lunch and refreshments); the cost goes up to $40 from September 17 thru October 2. On-site registration is $25.00 (no lunch). No mail-in registration will be accepted after October 2.
