PROTECTING THE ELDERLY FROM FINANCIAL ABUSE WORKSHOP FEB. 16-17 IN MONTGOMERY

Financial exploitation of the elderly is a growing problem in Alabama. In an effort to combat this situation, several state agencies are joining to sponsor a two-day workshop on the financial exploitation of the elderly.

It will be held on the Auburn University Montgomery campus in the Taylor Center, rooms 221-223.

The workshop will explore the many perspectives of how this problem impacts law enforcement, social services, banking and investments.

Some of the topics to be discussed include recognizing, reporting and investigating cases of elder financial abuse; elder abuse laws in Alabama; techniques for interviewing the elderly victim; and team approaches to investigating cases.

The workshop will feature three nationally known speakers --Dr.Jordon Kosberg, School of Social Work, University of Alabama; Dr. Larry Mullins, Auburn University, Montgomery and a representative from the Los Angeles County Fiduciary Abuse Team (FAST).

The workshop is aimed at professionals in the field of elder care, social services, law enforcement, banking and investments. Twelve contact hours and 1.2 continuing education hours will be given to law enforcement, social workers, counselors and nurses who attend.

The registration fee is $49 per person for those registering before Feb. 1 and includes materials, breaks and lunch both days. Interested persons also may register via phone at (334) 244-3929.
