OCTOBER 11 IS PARENTING DAY IN ALABAMA

AUBURN, SEPT. 3---October 11 is Parenting Day in Alabama. Many schools are participating in the event and will provide ongoing sessions and other activities for parents of children of all ages (from Head Start to high school).

Numerous organizations, such as the State Board of Education, the Governor's Office, the Alabama Coalition for Tomorrow and the Alabama Cooperative Extension System, are coordinating efforts to help parents of school-aged children learn more about their children's education on this day.

More than 100 of 128 school systems have signed up to participate, says Dr. Ellen Abell, Extension family and child development specialist with the Alabama Cooperative Extension System.

The goal of the Department of Education is to have 100,000 parents take part in the event. Each participating school was sent a packet of parent involvement information.

Abell encourages parents to check with their school district to see how to participate in strengthening the connections between families, youths,

and schools.
