Alabama 4-H Youth Win National Awards

Auburn, Oct. 19---Two Alabama teenagers earned prizes at the 51st National 4-H Engineering, Science and Leadership Event held in West Lafayette, Ind., in early October.

Bob Collins of Shelby County (pictured left) won first place in the automotive contest, one of nine contests in the competition. Blake Hindman of Fayette County (pictured below, right) placed second in the lawn tractor contest.

Other contests included aerospace, bicycle, computer, small engines, electric/energy, tractor and welding. All national contestants were county and state winners.

The event was conducted by Extension agricultural engineers and 4-H specialists from participating states. John Deere and Company sponsored the lawn tractor contest.

Contestants included 4-H youth from across the nation. They and their accompanying adults spent a day on educational field trips at Purdue University and in Frankfort, Ky. and Indianapolis, Ind. They had a chance to tour a variety of interesting facilities including the Indianapolis 500 Motor Speedway as well as manufacturing facilities of Frito-Lay and Caterpillar Engine.
