Satcher
to Speak at Food and Nutrition
Summer
Institute July 31 at Alabama A&M
Normal,
Alabama, June 28, 2002 --- Former United States Surgeon General
David Satcher will speak July 31 at the 4th Annual Food
and Nutrition Summer Institute held at Alabama A&M University (AAMU).
AAMU’s Department of
Family and Consumer Sciences and the Alabama Cooperative Extension
System’s Urban Affairs and New Nontraditional Programs unit are
hosting the four-day event -- Food, Fitness and Fun for a Healthy
Community -- July 27 to 31.
The United States
Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Research Service (ARS) is
sponsoring this annual conference. ARS is partnering with the
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Department of Health
and Human Services, including the Food and Drug Administration, and
two additional USDA services: the Cooperative State Research,
Education and Extension Service and the Food and Nutrition Service.
This is the first time
the institute has been conducted on the campus of a historically
black college or university. Conference planners are expecting 75 to
100 participants from across the country.
The institute targets
health and nutrition educators and is designed to keep them abreast
of national and international food and nutrition research, resources
and outreach opportunities. Last year, the institute was held in
Accra, Ghana, on the West Coast of Africa. A team of researchers,
educators and students from Alabama A&M attended the conference
and presented a research proposal to address some of the region’s
health issues resulting from various nutrient deficiencies.
Family and Consumer
Sciences and Urban Affairs also will feature food safety, fitness
and fun activities at the Winfred Thomas Research Station Sunday,
July 28 from 2:30 p.m. until 6 p.m. Information will be shared on
the state of community health and the benefits of urban and organic
gardening. The public will enjoy a celebration of diversity, a
cardiovascular fitness test called "walk-a-mile", a taste
of Alabama, and other health and nutrition activities.
"We are expecting
more than 150 participants from the community, university and
Extension to take part in this year’s activities," says Dr.
Donnie Cook, a health
and nutrition specialist
with the Alabama Cooperative Extension System.
A bus excursion departs
Maryland July 26 and will pick up participants in North Carolina,
South Carolina and Georgia.
