Alabama
Leaders Program Accepting Applications for Class VIII
The Alabama
Agriculture and Forestry Leadership Development Program, known as
LEADERS, currently is accepting applications for Class VIII which
will begin this July. LEADERS is a joint project of the Alabama
Cooperative Extension System, the Auburn University College of
Agriculture, and the AU School of Forestry and Wildlife Sciences and
is supported by a large and diverse group of agribusinesses and
other organizations.
It is a two-year program
aimed at helping Alabama farmers, landowners and others who work in
natural resources improve their leadership skills and gain a better
understanding of the political process.
"It's a program
that helps polish young people and make them more articulate leaders
for the agriculture industry," says Dr. Dennis Evans, head of
the LEADERS program. "It can take you to another level and help
you better understand the world beyond the farm gate."
The 50-day curriculum is
targeted to working adults between 25 and 40. Thirty people are
accepted for each class. A tuition fee applies. However, most
applicants receive assistance on tuition from farm or forestry
organizations or other business interests with which they are
affiliated. Participants attend seven in-state sessions as well as
travel on both a national study tour and an international tour. Past
classes have traveled to South America, Europe, Australia and New
Zealand as well as Japan and China.
Women and minorities are
encouraged strongly to apply. Applications will be accepted until
April 15. For more information, contact Evans at 204 Duncan Hall,
Auburn University, AL 36849 or call (334) 844-5552 or e-mail at
