HAVE A HOLIDAY SHOPPING PLAN FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY

AUBURN, Nov. 12---The holiday season is just a few weeks away. With the excitement of the season and the assortment of gifts available, it's easy to overspend during the holidays, says Dr. Fred Waddell, Extension family resource management specialist with the Alabama Cooperative Extension System.

People tend to forget about hidden holiday costs, such as clothing, extra groceries, wrapping paper, postage, travel and carpet cleaning. These and other holiday expenses are often compounded by big winter bills such as higher heating costs, annual insurance premiums, property taxes, membership dues and subscription costs. When added to holiday spending, these seasonal bills can create serious financial problems.

Often, money is not available for holiday purchases you want to make. The key to success is planning. Planning can save time, energy and money. Involve the whole family when making the spending plan.

Waddell says before making a plan, it's important to put the season in perspective. What is the purpose of the season? Why do you give gifts? Why do you celebrate?

Examine your family's income and expenses to determine how much holiday money is available. Once an amount has been determined, list all expenses to be paid from the money. Include such things as travel expenses, extra food costs for entertaining, holiday cards, stamps and gifts to charities. Be sure to include in your plan some way of handling unexpected gifts. Many times someone will remember you with a gift or card that you had not put on your list. You can just express thanks and give no gift. But, if you feel uncomfortable, set aside some gifts just for that purpose.

Make a gift list and check it twice to see if you can afford what you are planning to spend. Never shop for holiday gifts without your list of total costs; stay within your planned budget.

If you get an urge to binge or to go overboard while spending, leave the store immediately while you're still in control.
