Youth Livestock Expo Highlights March
Auburn, Feb. 27---March
Madness often refers to basketball, but in Alabama, it could also
describe the extensive youth livestock events slated for the month.
More than 400 young people will show beef cattle and sheep as part
of the Alabama Junior Livestock Expo.
The
Alabama Junior Livestock Expo will be held March 10-12 as well as
March 17-18 at Garrett Coliseum in Montgomery.
Bob Ebert, an animal
scientist with the Alabama Cooperative Extension System, says there
will be some new opportunities for competitors this year.
"The Alabama Junior
Beef Expo will be enhanced with the unveiling of several new
components," says Ebert. "One new element will be the
selection of the Supreme Showmanship Champion."
He explains that the
winners of the nine age classes in beef showmanship will return to
the show-ring with their animals and compete against each other for
the title of Supreme Showmanship Champion.
"This is a great
example of rewarding a youngster who excels in the show-ring in
presenting their animal to the judge," says Ebert. "It
places the emphasis on the child's skills and abilities rather than
on the animal."
The Junior Beef Expo,
set for March 10-12, features competition in showmanship, breed
steer and heifer shows, a beef quiz bowl competition as well as the
80th Alabama State Steer Show.
To compete at the state
level, young people showing beef cattle must participate in one of
three district shows.
The Junior Sheep Expo
will be held March 17-18. Like its beef counterpart, young people
will have the opportunity to compete in showmanship and a sheep quiz
bowl. They will also show their animals at the 2001 Alabama Spring
Breeding Sheep Show.
Ebert says both quiz
bowl competitions offer opportunities to young people who do not
want to show an animal.
"It provides a
chance for three- to four-person teams to showcase their knowledge
of either the beef or sheep industry," says Ebert.
Last year, Jennifer
Waters of Pike County showed the Grand Champion Steer at the 79th
Alabama State Steer Show.
