David Rouse Named Interim Head of AU's Fisheries Department

Auburn, Feb. 14---Dr. David Rouse has been named the interim head of Auburn University's Department of Fisheries and Allied Aquacultures. He replaces Dr. John Jensen, who was recently selected to serve as interim head of the university's College of Agriculture.

"I have personally worked side by side with Dr. Rouse for 20 years and am confident that he can lead the diverse and world renown teaching, research and extension interests of our Department of Fisheries and Allied Aquacultures," Jensen said. "Dr. Rouse is dedicating himself to the needs of our citizens throughout Alabama. Through his leadership and the continuing strong support of our aquaculture, recreational fishing and conservation partners, we know that

this department will continue to accomplish greatness."

Rouse is an Auburn native and holds degrees from Auburn University and Texas A&M University. He earned a bachelors degree in marine biology from Auburn in 1971 and a masters degree in fisheries in 1973. He worked seven years for the state of Alabama in the area of aquatic ecology before returning to school at Texas A&M to complete his doctorate in aquaculture.

He has been on faculty at Auburn since 1981, where he has taught classes and conducted research on a variety of fish and shellfish.

"I can think of no greater honor and challenge than to help lead a team of scientists that have already established an international reputation for their contributions in areas of aquatic ecology, fisheries management and aquaculture," he said.

Rouse's specialties include shrimp, crayfish and oyster aquaculture. His research is widely recognized and has been presented in more than 75 scientific meetings and 50 journal publications. He has provided technical assistance throughout the United States, and to 20 countries around the world.

Some of his recent accomplishments include the completion of a two-story marine lab on Dauphin Island, which will house the departments of mariculture research and teaching activities.

In 2001 Dr. Rouse was awarded an Alumni Professorship in recognition for his contributions to AU's academic programs.

Rouse is married to Auburn native Cynthia Vestal Rouse. They have four children.
