FAMILY CONFERENCE SET FOR OCT. 20 AT ALABAMA A&M UNIVERSITY

NORMAL, SEPT. 17---The Urban Affairs and New Nontraditional Programs of the Alabama Cooperative Extension System at Alabama A&M University is sponsoring a family conference Oct. 20. The one-day conference is set for 9 a.m. until 2:35 p.m. at the James I. Dawson Building Auditorium on the Alabama A&M University campus. The registration fee is $15 per person.

The theme of the conference is "The State of the Urban Family in the New Millennium." The target audience is family and consumer sciences educators, parent educators, social workers, daycare providers, Extension agents and all professionals who work with children and families.

"This conference will provide excellent opportunities for all professionals who work with children and families to enhance their skills and learn relevant and current information about family and child issues. It will also give attendees a chance to network with other professionals from across the state," says Dr. Wilma Ruffin, Extension family and human development specialist with the Alabama Cooperative Extension System.

The keynote speaker for the event is Naomi Griffith, a nationally known speaker and consultant on child welfare issues. She speaks at conferences throughout the United States using humor and her own experiences to challenge and inspire audiences in business, education, juvenile justice, mental health, child abuse prevention and family violence systems.

In addition to the speaker, three breakout sessions are planned. Session topics include "Brain Development of Children (ages 0-6), "Safe Kids," and "Consumer Education/Fraud." The format of the conference will allow participants to attend each of the three sessions.
