Germ City to Reach Small Farmers in Final Phase

Normal, Dec. 19, 2003--- The new year marks the final phase of the three-year multistate grant “Clean Hands, Healthy People.”  In 2001, Alabama Extension Health and Nutrition Specialist Dr. Donnie Cook and other Extension specialists from Hawaii, Idaho, Washington and West Virginia were awarded a $500,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.  A feature of the grant is Germ City, an interactive, science-based program that visually demonstrates the importance of proper hand washing.  (More...)

Auburn University Nutrition and Food Science Professor Dr. Margaret Craig-Schmidt is a nutritional biochemist specializing in the health effects of omega-3 fatty acids.  Dr. Chris Newland, Auburn University Alumni Professor of psychology, is a behavioral neuroscientist who has spent most of the past decade exploring the toxic effects of methyl mercury. Robert Burdett Retiring From Extension System After 35 Years of Service

Auburn, Dec.17, 2003---Dr. Robert A. Burdett will retire from the Alabama Cooperative Extension System Dec. 31 after 35 years of service.  He has spent his entire Extension career working in seed technology with the Alabama Crop Improvement Association.  He was appointed as an Extension agronomist in 1968.  (More...)

Fish Warning Complicates Healthy Living Quest

Auburn, Dec. 16, 2003 --- Healthier living may have just gotten harder. 

The Food and Drug Administration and the Environmental Protection Agency are drafting a warning that advises pregnant women and children to limit their intake of tuna and other fish and shellfish to 12 ounces a week, roughly two or three servings. (More...)

Farmer Finds Salvation in Christmas Tree Farming

Alabama Farm Safety  Education Program Addressing Safe Tractor Operations

Auburn, AL---In the last month, two Alabamians have been killed in tractor overturn accidents. According to the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health, 75 percent of all farm fatalities are the result of tractor implement incidents.  About 47 percent of all farm fatalities are the result of tractor overturn.
