Irrigation Industry Honors Extension's Larry Curtis

Auburn, Jan. 25---Larry Curtis, an Alabama Cooperative Extension soil and water engineer and a professor of biosystems engineering at Auburn University, recently was named the 2000 Person of the Year by the Irrigation Association.

Each year, this award is presented to someone outside the commercial industry who has made outstanding contributions to the irrigation practices.

"The Person of the Year award is given to a person who has dedicated his or her life making irrigation technology a positive force for enhancing a global society," said

Bill Pogue, chairman of the awards committee.

Curtis was honored for his work in irrigation water resource management and for his educational efforts to farming and irrigation communities. Since the mid-1980s, Curtis' research and Extension efforts have focused on creating a comprehensive irrigation water resource management and development program for Alabama. In addition, he recently headed an off-stream storage study and irrigation research facility established by the Tennessee Valley Research and Extension Center in Belle Mina.

An Auburn University faculty member since 1976, Curtis earned his bachelor's and master's degrees at Auburn. Before coming to Auburn, he served on the faculty of the University of Florida, was an assistant bureau chief for the Florida Department of Natural Resources and an irrigation specialist at the University of Georgia.
