Covington
County 4-H Meats Judging TeamPlaces Second in Western Conference
Contest
AUBURN, JAN. 18---The
Covington County 4-H Meats Judging Team recently placed second at
the 81st Western 4-H Roundup Conference Contest in
Denver, Co.
Alabama team members
included Brad Bowman, Justin Brooks, Jonathon Little and Gray Rider.
Covington County Extension Agent Willie Durr and Barney Wilborn,
meats science graduate student, coached the team.
Forty-four 4-H'ers from
12 states competed in the event. The Alabama team was first in Oral
Reasons, fourth in total Pork Judging, fourth in total Beef Judging
and fourth in total Contest Judging. Overall individual honors went
to Alabama team members Gray Rider, third place, Brad Bowman, fifth
place, and Jonathon Little, 13th place.
In the placing of pork
carcasses, Brad Bowman won third high individual honors and the
Alabama team placed sixth. Alabama won the Pork Reasons division by
dominating with Bowman first, Rider sixth and Little ninth. In the
total pork division, Bowman was the high individual and the Alabama
team finished fourth.
In the placing of beef
carcasses, Gray Rider was eighth with Brad Bowman winning Beef
Reasons. In addition, Bowman was the high individual in Oral Reasons
with an average score exceeding 47 out of a possible 50. Jonathon
Little was 10th in Oral Reasons. The finals of the
Judging division found Bowman in third place and Rider finishing
ninth.
In the Identification
component of the contest, Rider finished fourth, Little, eighth,
Brooks ninth and the Alabama team second. The Alabama Cattlemen's
Association, A.C. Legg Co., and R.L. Zeigler Co., provided financial
support for the 4-H Meats Science program.
