Extension System Works to Inform Alabamians about Upcoming Tax Reform and Accountability Plan

Auburn, Aug. 15, 2003 --- Alabamians will go to the polls on Sept. 9 to vote on a historic tax reform and accountability plan.  The outcome of that vote will have long-term consequences for all Alabamians.  In order to educate voters about the plan, the Alabama Cooperative Extension System is producing a series of informational satellite videoconferences titled “Proposed Tax Changes for Alabama—The Facts” that will be aired on August 26 and 28.  The purpose of these videoconferences is to educate voters about this plan.

The series will provide people with information about the contents of the tax reform and accountability plan, so they will be able to make an informed choice at the polls.  Experts from Extension, Auburn University’s School of Forestry and Wildlife Sciences and the Auburn University College of Agriculture will provide an overview of the plan.

The first videoconference, titled “Session 1: Income Tax, Residential Property Tax and Accountability,” will air August 26, from noon to 1 p.m. and will address the impact these proposed new tax measures will have on income and residential taxes.  Accountability provisions outlined in the proposed plan will also be discussed.

Session 1 will be re-aired August 28 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

The impact of the proposed plan on forestry and agricultural property will be the subject of the second videoconference titled “Session 2: Forest and Ag Land Property Tax and Accountability.”  A segment of the program also will be devoted to a discussion of the accountability provisions outlined in the plan.  Session 2 will air for the first time August 26, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. and will be re-aired on August 28, from noon to 1 p.m.

All four telecasts, which are underwritten by Extension, will be downloaded at County Extension Offices, carried over the Auburn University cable system Channel 17 at the same times and streamed from the Extension Web site.
