4-H Teams Compete in National/Regional Contests
AUBURN, Jan. 19---Alabama
4-H was well represented in three national 4-H events and one
regional contest in recent months. The winning State 4-H
Congress teams were
awarded trips to compete in national and regional competitions.
The State Meats Judging
Team, coached by Coffee County Extension Agent Stan Windham,
competed in the National 4-H Meats Judging Contest in Manhattan,
Kan. Twenty-one states were represented, with Alabama finishing in
fifth place.
Alabama team members
were Sarah Maddox, Shawn Howell, Josh Motley and Katy Roberts.
Maddox garnered a third place in Beef Judging, a third place in Pork
Judging and a fifth place in Oral Reasons.
The State Livestock Agri-Knowledge
Team, coached by Tuscaloosa County Extension Agent Johnny Gladney,
competed in the National 4-H Invitational Livestock Skillathon in
Louisville, Ky., and finished sixth in a field of 15 states. Team
members included Ellis Thorne, Heather Mosely, Adam Potts and
Heather Reach. Thorne placed ninth in the Identification division.
The Alabama team finished fifth in Identification and fifth in
Evaluation.
The State Livestock
Judging Team, also coached by Stan Windham, competed in the National
4-H Livestock Judging Contest in Louisville, Ky. They finished 31st
out of 35 teams competing. Team members included Ann Schieffer,
Kendall Amis, Ashley Green and Andy Waddail. Schieffer placed 24th
in Sheep Judging. The Alabama team placed 21st in Sheep
Judging and 21st in Swine Judging.
The Morgan County 4-H
Livestock Judging and Agri-Knowledge Team competed in the Eastern
U.S. 4-H/FFA Livestock Judging and Stockman's contests in
Blacksburg, Va. Team members included Brian Crow, Dustin Crow, Brett
Crow, David Glasscock and Russ Roberts. Sandy Fields, volunteer 4-H
leader and agri-science education teacher at Danville High School,
coached the team.
Seven teams competed in
the Stockman's Contest. Alabama finished fourth, with Brian Crow
placing seventh and Brett Crow finishing ninth. Eleven teams
competed in the Judging contest. Alabama finished eighth, overall,
placing sixth in both Swine and Oral Reasons. Brian Crow placed 16th
in Swine Judging and Brett Crow was 14th in Oral Reasons.
