Education


Contributions in Education

Dr. Henderson has been an advocate educator at the elementary/secondary, undergraduate/graduates levels. Further, she has contributed many years of teaching through programs and activities for non-formal education for adults.

Dr. Henderson has been a faculty and staff member of Alabama A&M University since 1976. During her tenure at the university she has served as:

In these capacities she had developed and published curriculum materials, teaching aide, popular bulletins and other publications. Some of her educational contributions include:

  1. Extension Publications- More than two hundred (200) Extension publications and presentations on subjects related to: home repair, table linens, quits, consumer guide for major home appliances, don't be fuelish, recycle and save, and important consumer regulations, home based businesses, and energy conservation
  2. Refereed Publications- Some of Dr. Henderson's referred publications include; Work/Family concerns of University Faculty, Journal of Work and Family; Family Satisfaction and Job Performance: Implications for Career Development, Journal of Career Development; The Relationship Between Housing Satisfaction and Satisfaction with Overall Quality of Life, Journal of American Association of Housing Educators, and The Influence of Housing Satisfaction on Job Performance, Home Economics Research Journal.
  3. Training and Workshops-Many of the activities of Extension involve the development and presentation of training materials. Dr. Henderson has developed and presented more than thirty-five in-depth workshops and training sessions in areas related to: home maintenance energy conservation, home furnishings, home based businesses, and housing.

More recently, she developed and implemented the e-course in housing and interiors for the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences. This course allowed adult learners throughout the state to take the course through distance education while remaining on their jobs.

Dr. Henderson also served as a Vocational Home Economics Teacher at Marengo County Training School for seven years. In this capacity she had the opportunity to develop curricula activities to help youth develop important life skills in; nutrition, health, food preparation and sanitation, housing, relationships, and clothing.

Professional and Community Involvement

Since the beginning of her emergence into teaching and Extension, Dr. Henderson has maintained her involvement in professional and community development activities. Her involvement as committee member, president of local and districts affiliates, and board member of state affiliates has lead to membership in more than twenty-five professional organization to include:

Though various community activities Dr. Henderson has provided service and shared her skills and expertise with Habitat for Humanity, Jail Outreach Ministry, Volunteer of Huntsville Hospital, Harris Home for Children, Financial Management for Limestone Correctional Facility, Farmers Home Administration, Huntsville Madison County Affordable Housing, ABC Daycare.
