Beef Trade Breakthrough
Recently, Japanese and U.S. government officials agreed to resume the beef trade, though with certain provisions. U.S. beef exports were halted by Japan in Dec., 2003, following detection of the first case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy, so-called mad cow disease, in Washington.
According to U.S. Agriculture Secretary Ann Veneman, the Tokyo agreement will allow U.S. beef shipments to resume under a special marketing program.
Dr. Walt Prevatt, an agricultural economist with the Alabama Cooperative Extension System, says it may be six months before actual trade resumes.
