Small Ruminant Symposium Set for March

Normal, AL---The Alabama Cooperative Extension System’s Urban Affairs & New Nontraditional Programs unit will hold its Third Annual Small Ruminant Spring Symposium on Saturday, March 7 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Alabama A&M University’s Winfred Thomas Agricultural Research Station. The theme this year is “Sustainable Goat and Sheep Production.”

Interest in meat goats as an alternative form of agricultural production continues to grow throughout the United States. Both farmers and consumers are expressing an interest in natural-fed livestock such as goats and sheep. This is not just a trend, but an opportunity for producers to pursue specialty or niche markets by offering a natural product and simultaneously to minimize production costs and increase revenue. Sustainable livestock production is practical and affordable, and if managed correctly, can keep animals healthier. Healthy livestock results in a healthy food product.

Presenters include specialists from Alabama and Tennessee that will not only provide valuable information, but also will be there to answer questions. The Small Ruminant Symposium is open to the public. Registration is $10.00 per person, which includes lunch.

To preregister, please call Robert Spencer at (256) 766-6223. Early registration is expected to determine lunch count. For other information, please contact Robert Spencer or Eddie Wheeler at (256) 582-2009.
