Extension’s Rosalind James Featured in Dothan Magazine

Rosalind James, an Alabama Cooperative Extension System urban regional agent in Houston County, recently was featured in DOTHAN Magazine’s March/April 2008 issue (www.dothanmagazine.com).

The article profiles six women that make a difference in the community through their job or volunteer service.

James, who has worked for Extension 27 years, delivers a vibrant program in the Dothan/ Wiregrass region. She is driven to succeed in her endeavor to reach people of all ages by delivering issue-driven programming dressed in nontraditional packages.

When delivering youth career programs, such as the Youth Career Summit to urban 11th - and 12th - grade female students, her message alerts young women of the major benefits that are offered in nontraditional, high-paying and high-skilled careers for women in technology, allied health, aviation and avionics and entrepreneurship fields. When this program is offered, it is packaged with entertainers, famous guest speakers, trips and awards.

Young 11th- and 12th-grade men of Dothan’s high schools insisted that they also get a program like this, and James arranged it even though 85 percent of the high-skilled and high-wage jobs featured in the Summit are already male owned. The results of this program are shown in the 20 percent increase in girls opting for the technical careers in Dothan colleges.

Other programs James delivers are also on cutting edge topics, such as obesity in youth, teen pregnancy and entrepreneurship. These, too, were delivered in nontraditional ways. She used high profile celebrities, such as Stedman Graham and Ruben Studdard in two programs that were not only covered by major news outlets, such as CNN and FOX, but one was underwritten and another was featured on BET.

James is well known because of her successful style of delivering positive programming in the Houston area. Many in the Dothan area know her and want to be involved with whatever program she has her hands in.
