4-H Day Slated for U.S. Space and Rocket Center
The U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville will welcome 4-H’ers from across Alabama and neighboring states for 4-H Day Saturday, April 12. Members of Alabama 4-H, the youth development arm of the Alabama Cooperative Extension System, will enjoy a special package of activities including guided museum tours, an IMAX movie, lunch, public simulators and Discovery Theater presentations.
Cost for 4-H Space Day at the USSRC is $18. For more information, contact your county Extension office.
Dr. Tony Cook, an Extension 4-H specialist, says the special day at the Space and Rocket Center meshes well with one of 4-H’s national priorities.
“The 4-H Science, Engineering and Technology (SET) program is a primary national goal for the next five years,” says Cook.
Nationally, 4-H SET activities are reaching more than 2 million youth with hands-on learning experiences that foster exploration, discovery and passion for the sciences.
Cook says the combination of content and context in 4-H clubs, camps and special programs is proven to have a positive effect on youth.
“It’s creating young adults who are prepared to contribute, excel and lead in their communities and workplaces.”
In Alabama, 4-H has initiated new programs in science, engineering and technology including robotics, rocketry and conceptual design.
“In science learning, we strive to improve knowledge and understanding. For engineering, youth are learning to conceptualize and design solutions, and youth learn that technology is about tools and applications of knowledge,” Cook adds.
