Extension Training for Caregivers Set for March 13, 14 and 28
It is estimated that more than a half million people in Alabama are caregivers for an ill, disabled or older family member. Are you one of them? Would training help you do a better job?
The Alabama Cooperative Extension System in cooperation with the Lee-Russell Council of Governments and Auburn University School of Nursing is offering an intensive three-day workshop for caregivers including family member, friend and professional caregivers in Barbour, Bullock, Elmore, Lee, Macon, Montgomery and Russell counties.
Entitled “Alabama Home Caregiver: Caring for Caregivers,” the free workshop will be held at Lakeview Baptist Church Fellowship Hall in Auburn. The church is located on the corner of East University Drive and East Glenn Avenue.
“The purpose of the workshop is to provide research-based information and hands-on training that can help ease the burdens associated with caregiving and increase caregivers’ skills and knowledge of caregiving and respite issues,” says Jatunn Gibson, an Extension gerontology specialist.
Extension has put together a team of 12 professionals to conduct the training. A wide range of topics will be covered including aging, communicating with seniors, body mechanics, business and finance issues, home maintenance, disaster planning, nutrition, personal care, senior fraud, and time and stress management.
The workshop is approved for social work and nursing contact hours and continuing education units for nursing.
