Southern Growth Policies Board Meets in Montgomery
The Southern Growth Policies Board recently convened in Montgomery to discuss strategies on how to strengthen and capture the talents of youth in the South.
Formed by the region’s governors in 1971, Southern Growth Policies Board connects a wide cross-section of the region’s governors, legislators, business and citizen leaders from 13 Southern states in face-to-face dialog to foster policy innovation and collaborative action. This unique public-private partnership is devoted to strengthening the South’s economy and creating the highest possible quality of life. States involved include Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia. Each state has five members on the board.
“Southern Growth’s diverse membership enables it to bring a fresh mix of views and expertise to the table in a neutral setting,” said Arturo Menefee, a leadership development specialist with the Economic and Community Development Institute at Auburn University.
“This encourages policy change and a more accurate assessment of the region’s strengths and weaknesses. It also enables its members to quickly disseminate good ideas to the larger decision-making structures and general public.”
Information gathered from the recent meeting will be used in presentations at the 2008 Southern Growth’s annual conference in Arkansas, and in developing the 2008 Southern Growth’s report on the “Future of the South.”
