Extension to Hold Fifth Successful Aging Initiative
The Alabama Cooperative Extension System will hold the fifth Successful Aging Initiative (SAI) Thursday, Sept. 13 from 8 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. at Union Chapel Missionary Baptist Church. The church is located at 315 Winchester Road NE in Huntsville, Ala.
The SAI is sponsored by Extension, the Alabama Bureau of Geriatric Psychiatry and other local and statewide partners. This conference helps educate and provide resources to Alabama citizens on current issues relevant to aging, such as estate planning, financial management, health care and senior lifestyles.
Keynote speaker for the one-day conference will be AARP State Director Joan Carter, who is also a Huntsville native.
In the opening general session -- Gender, Aging and Health -- attendees will be divided by gender for an Ask the Experts presentation and discussion with local doctors on health issues that are unique to men or women. Men are encouraged to attend.
The Pfizer Pharmaceutical Company will also provide free memory screenings throughout the day and information will be shared about free resources and services available to senior citizens, their families and caregivers. Other health screenings will be available throughout the day compliments of Huntsville Hospital and J.F. Drake State Technical College.
A hot lunch will also be prepared on site by Chef Jeff of Entrees Express and more than $2,500 in door prizes will be raffled.
Seating is limited. Participants must register by 5 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 10 by calling Jackie Collier at (256) 372-4947. For general information, please contact Attorney Kevin Crenshaw, SAI coordinator, at (256) 372-4939.
