4-H Shows Youth There Are "No Limits"
The 2006 4-H Midwinter Teen Leadership Retreat was held Feb. 17 through 19 at the Alabama 4-H Youth Development Center in Columbiana.
The theme of this year's event was "No Limits: Overcoming Obstacles." It focused on helping Alabama teens learn to respond positively and creatively to the challenges they face.
Ninety-five youth from 28 counties participated in workshops developed by 4-H youth, Collegiate 4-H, Alabama Cooperative Extension System personnel and the Alabama Department of Public Safety. Young people learned about teen vehicle safety, public speaking, health and fitness, and they had an opportunity to meet Alabama State Treasurer Kay Ivey.
Because both fitness and the arts are key components of modern 4-H, the teens also learned the shag, the cotton-eyed Joe, and a little hip-hHop dancing thanks to Columbiana's Dream Makers Dance Company.
All youth attending the retreat were trained in a new 4-H program, Just Move Alabama. This program teaches youth the importance of exercise and healthy eating and to accept all body types.
Training was drawn from three new 4-H Just Move kits: "Jumping for Health," "Frisbee, Fun and Food," and "Volley, Vitals and Vittles." Each of these kits teaches a physical activity - jump rope, Frisbee and volleyball - along with lessons on nutrition and food safety or body image.
The teens were challenged to go back to their home counties and teach other young people about good physical and nutritional health using these club kits.
