4-H Shooting Sports Training and Certification Feb. 25 at 4-H Center

Attention shooting sports enthusiasts! Here's your chance to become a certified 4-H Shooting Sports instructor. A training workshop for adult volunteers interested in working with the 4-H Shooting Sports program is planned for Feb. 25 in conjunction with the Alabama 4-H Volunteer Leaders Retreat at the 4-H Center in Columbiana.

The purpose of the workshop is to provide adults who will be instructing youth shooting sports programs with safe and proper instruction techniques. Volunteer leaders will learn how to plan and manage a local 4-H club; ways to promote the highest standards of safety, sportsmanship and ethical behavior among volunteers and youth; and ways to enhance existing hunter education and 4-H Shooting Sports program training.

Anyone who has not had shooting sports youth development training, must attend training Friday evening, Feb. 24 from 7 to 9 p.m. or in their county at a time to be determined.

Participants may sign up for one of the following disciplines: rifle, archery or shotgun. They will train in that discipline for the entire day. All participants will receive information on 4-H youth development, risk management, and training in safety and teaching methodology. Participants will also get a chance to practice teach their discipline to others.

All workshop participants must bring eye and ear protection and comfortable clothes and shoes for outdoor activities. Don't forget rain gear. Any firearms or bows brought will be subject to inspection. Equipment deemed unsuitable for 4-H purposes will not be used. Ammunition will be provided.

Cost of the workshop is only $20 per person and includes lunch, a t-shirt and training materials. Registration is due by Feb. 6. County Extension offices have registration forms and copies of the workshop agenda.

Upon completion of the training, participants will be certified as 4-H Shooting Sports instructors and may conduct 4-H Shooting Sports programs in Alabama.
