2005 Beef Short Course Set for January

Alabama beef cattle producers will get the chance to add new tools and skills to their management toolbox at the 2005 Beef Short Course Jan. 7 and 8 at the Hotel at Auburn University.

Dr. Lisa Kriese-Anderson, an Alabama Cooperative Extension System animal scientist, says the conference features several nationally known experts in beef production.

“It’s a great opportunity for our producers to hear some of the top folks in the industry address topics from reproduction to marketing,” says Kriese-Anderson.

Dr. Sandy Johnson of Kansas State University will give a talk titled “The Cost of Using AI and Natural Service Sires.” Johnson and her colleagues have developed a computer software package to enable producers to schedule artificial insemination to achieve maximum pregnancy rates in the brood cow herd.

Dr. Derrell Peel of Oklahoma State University will discuss how current issues will shape the American beef industry, and Dr. John Lawrence of Iowa State University will outline the change in beef marketing efforts.

Extension specialists in beef production as well as a number of Auburn University professors and researchers will round out the program.

Producers will have the chance to attend one of four breakout sessions.

• Carcass Primer—Led by Dr. Chris Kerth, Auburn meat scientist at Lambert-Powell Meats Lab

• Beef Quality Assurance Education and Certification—Led by Dr. Frank Owsley, Extension animal scientist at Stanley Wilson Beef Unit

• Interpreting Feed and Forage Analyses—ALFA Services Building

• AU Bull Test Open House—AU Bull Test Complex

The conference, sponsored by Extension, the College of Agriculture, the Department of Animal Sciences and the Alabama Beef Cattle Improvement Association, costs $85 for registration before Jan. 3. Late registration is $100 per person.

Alabama BCIA will hold its annual awards banquet Saturday night as part of the conference. Cost is $25 per person with early registration and $35 after Jan. 3.
