Calhoun Master Gardeners Learn about Gourds
The Calhoun County Master Gardeners recently conducted training in curing and decorating gourds. The gourds were grown at Cane Creek Community Garden at Ft. McClellan as part of a plasticulture system demonstration sponsored by The Alabama Cooperative Extension System, Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries and Coosa Valley Resource Conservation and Development Council.
Master Gardener volunteers were trained in curing and cleaning gourds early in the year. They brought their prepared gourds to a day-long class to learn how to craft useful goods from the gourds.
Master Gardeners reported on their work to the county commission (http://www.calhouncounty.org/news/meeting032609.html), and they will hold a training class for the public later in the year as part of their “Lunch and Learn” educational series at Cane Creek Garden. The lunch and learn programs are scheduled for April 29, May 27, June 24, July 22, Aug. 26, Sept. 23 and Oct. 28.
