Talladega Extension office Presents Plasticulture Program in Knoxville Community
More than 60 gardeners assembled at an on-site gardening location in the Knoxville community in Talladega Feb. 26 to learn about plasticulture gardening. The group included backyard gardeners as well as commercial producers from Talladega County and surrounding counties. A hands-on demonstration included the installation of a drip irrigation system and the installation of large sheets of black plastic.
Participants learned that the plastic helps to conserve moisture during hot summer days, but were more excited about the labor-saving advantage of slowing the growth of summer weeds. The group observed a demonstration on how to supply the plant nutrients through the irrigation system.
The plasticulture method of gardening promotes early crop production and helps extend the plant production, creating more vegetables for the gardener’s efforts.
