Calhoun County Sponsoring Third Annual Piggy Bank Pageant

To celebrate America Saves Week February 22 through March 1, the Calhoun County Saves program is sponsoring its third annual Piggy Bank Pageant, Feb. 26.

“The Calhoun County Saves program is a local Alabama Cooperative Extension System program designed to educate and assist low to moderate income individuals on how to build wealth through systematic saving and debt reduction,” says Isaac Chappell, a regional Extension agent. More than 100 citizens participate in the savings education program, saving hundreds of dollars a year.

“The piggy bank pageant is a great way to teach children how to save,” Chappell adds.

Contestants are encouraged to make custom piggy banks from milk cartons, soda bottles or any other items. Each bank must hold coins and be no larger than 18 inches by 18 inches by 18 inches. Contestants also can dress up or decorate an existing piggy bank with markers, crayons, picture cutouts, fabric or anything else.

Contestants model their banks for judges and nine monetary awards are given in three age categories: 7 years and younger, 8 to 12 years and 13 to 17 years. Only one entry per child in the appropriate age category is allowed.

The pageant has grown each year. Forty students entered banks last year.

Pageant registration forms and rules are available at the Calhoun County Extension office or online at http://www.aces.edu/Calhoun.
