The Alabama Cooperative Extension System Marengo County office held a 4-H "Fun with Etiquette" day camp recently at the Rural Heritage Center in Thomaston. Twenty-two children ranging in age from 7 to 12 participated in games and activities geared towards teaching basic etiquette skills.
The areas of etiquette taught in the program were phone manners, introductions, polite conversation, thank you notes, proper behavior of a guest/host, table settings, formal napkin folding and table manners.
Chef Dodd, the certified executive chef for Mama Nem’s Bistro in the Rural Heritage Center, wowed the audience with his tales of working with Emeril Lagasse and Martha Stewart, appearing on the Food Network Channel and working as a chef all over the world. Chef Dodd demonstrated formal napkin folding, which proved to be the highlight of the program! At the conclusion of the program, the children set their own tables, enjoyed a meal prepared by Chef Dodd allowing them to show off their table manners, and wrote thank you notes in appreciation for the time and effort put forth to make the day camp such a success.
