Wild turkey management was the focus for approximately a hundred private landowners, loggers and natural resource professionals at a recent forestry field day held at the Brushy Lake Recreation Area in the Bankhead National Forest.
Mike Henshaw, Winston County Extension coordinator, said the Alabama Cooperative Extension System partnered with the Winston County Natural Resources Council and the National Wild Turkey Federation to present the program.
Participants toured six locations featuring forest management practices that can strengthen wild turkey populations. Beneficial practices, such as thinning trees in overstocked forests and prescribed burning, were highlighted by biologists, foresters and wildlife management professionals.
One popular session, “Hunting the Eastern Wild Turkey”, was taught by private landowners Joel and Jeff Pounders. The two brothers own Little Bear Farms, and are enthusiastic about managing the wild turkey population on their property. Henshaw noted that more than 30 individual volunteers and nine different natural resource organizations teamed up to make the day a success. Evaluations of the field day indicated that many landowners plan to implement wildlife management techniques showcased at the field day.
