To celebrate America Saves Week February 24 through March 2, the Calhoun County Saves program, is sponsoring its second annual Piggy Bank Pageant, Feb. 26 at 5:30 p.m. at the Anniston City Meeting Center, 17th and Noble Streets.

"The Calhoun County Saves program is a local Alabama Cooperative Extension System program designed to educate and assist low to moderate income individuals on how to build wealth through systematic saving and debt reduction," said Isaac Chappell, a regional Extension agent. More than 100 citizens participate in the savings education program, saving hundreds of dollars a year.

Contestants are encouraged to make custom piggy banks from milk cartons, soda bottles or any other items. Each bank must hold coins and be no larger than 18 inches by 18 inches by 18 inches.

“Create a piggy bank with personality, such as a pretty pig, happy hog, serious sow or pudgy piglet,” said David West, Extension coordinator for Calhoun County. Contestants can dress up or decorate an existing piggy bank with markers, crayons, picture cutouts, fabric or anything else they can think of.

Contestants will model their banks for judges. A total of nine monetary awards will be given in three age categories: 7 year and younger, 8 to 12 years and 13 to 17 years. Only one entry per child in the appropriate age category is allowed.

According to County Extension Agent Tiffany Moore, 32 children entered piggy banks last year. More than 65 parents and friends attended the pageant.

Pageant registration forms are available at the Calhoun County Extension Office or online at http://www.aces.edu/Calhoun. Completed forms must be received by February 22, 2008.
