Reeling in Alabama

The 20.68 inches of precipitation recorded at Huntsville International Airport is 11 inches short of the average midyear amount, the Huntsville Times reports today.

Meanwhile, Muscle Shoals, with 27.2 inches of rain as of Tuesday, is 3.71 inches below normal.

Needless to say, that has many area farmers worried.

The article quotes Mark Hall, an Alabama Cooperative Extension System regional agent, who says the skimpy rainfall will mean lower yields of cotton, soybeans and corn.

Hall also predicts Madison County’s 2004 high yield of 125 bushels of corn per acre won’t be met this year. Indeed, he says much of the corn acreage in north Alabama has matured beyond the point of edibility due to the unusually dry conditions.
