National Wear Red Day, Feb. 3

Every woman needs to know about heart disease --- the reason why the American Heart Association has designated Feb. 3 as National Wear Red Day, a day when Americans nationwide wear red to show their support for women’s heart disease awareness.

As far as the organizers of Wear Red Day are concerned, far too few women have come to terms with this “heart truth.” Far too few understand how factors such as high blood pressure and high cholesterol ultimately contribute to an increased risk of heart disease --- a fact reflected in surveys showing that only 20 percent of women identify heart disease as the greatest problem facing them.

The centerpiece of The Heart Truth is the Red Dress, which was launched as the national symbol for women and heart disease awareness during American Heart month at Fashion Week in February 2003. The Red Dress reminds women of the need to protect their heart health, and inspires them to take action.
