The Revolution Continues

Biotech reached a milestone this year: The 1 billionth acre of a genetically modified crop was planted in 2005.

What does the biotech revolution portend? The implications are almost too numerous to mention. One particularly far-reaching trend may involve the replacement of so-called calorie crops with high-energy producing crops aimed at reducing America’s dependency on foreign energy supplies.

“Wheat will become economically obsolete,” predicts Tom Peeper, a weed science professor at Oklahoma State University.

Indeed, he believes U.S. farmers eventually will abandon calorie crops in favor of crops with higher export value, namely canola, soybeans, sunflower and corn for ethanol.
