In Windows 95 you will start the backup program under Programs, Accessories, System Tools. The backup program will open and you should then select a backup set to perform.
Once a backup set is defined you can use it each time you want to perform a backup of a certain group of files. The backup is named, in our example, "NEP 96-97 backup".
Start Microsoft Backup (under Programs, Accessories, System Tools.)
Select the tab labeled "BACKUP"
On the left side of the screen is a window with the words, "Select files to backup" and underneath is the graphical representation of your computer. Next to some of the icons is a box with the + sign. When you click on the + sign, the icon will expand and show you the files and folders associated.
Click on the C: drive's + sign (to see the expanded view of the drive)
Move the scroll bar down so that you can see the folder containing the data you want to backup.
Click in the box next to the folder and a checkmark will appear in the box. Also, the contents of the folder appear on the right. Each file will also have a checkmark beside it. Click on the folder again to uncheck-mark the files. Then, checkmark only the files in the folder that you want to backup (on the right side of the screen.)
The checkmark indicates that these are the files selected to backup.
Now you need to save your BACKUP SET.
Click on the File menu on the menu bar at the top of the screen, then select Save.
The Save screen will come up and you should enter a name (that you choose) in the File name box.
Then click on the Save button.
To exit the program without doing a backup at this time, click on the Close button in the upper right corner of the window.
Start the Microsoft Backup program, located under Programs, Accessories, then System Tools, BACKUP.
Click on the Backup tab.
Select the File menu.
Select Open File set.
Select the backup set that you previously created.
Click Open.
Click on Next Step.
Click on the 3 1/2" floppy drive on the left side of the screen. When you click the icon, it will enter either A:\ or B:\ in the box on the right automatically.
Be sure to select the icon, and not the + sign.
Then click Start Backup.
Then type a label for this backup, for example Jan 97 NEP data
Click OK. And the backup begins the copying and compressing.
If it is not already running, start Microsoft Backup (under Programs, Accessories, System Tools).
Select the tab labeled "COMPARE"
Click on the 3 1/2" floppy drive on the left side of the screen. Be sure to select the icon, and not the + sign.
Click on the backup file shown on the right side of the screen. For example, NEP96-97.QIC.
Click on the Next Step button.
Check the C folder on the right side of the screen.
Then click Start Compare.
When the comparison is complete, make sure it says "Errors Encountered: 0" at the bottom of the window. Otherwise, your backup is not viable and you should redo the backup on a different floppy disk.
