How to transfer a WP51File to Word

WordPerfect 5.1 files have traditionally been saved to the folder C:\WP51FILE

To transfer a file from WordPerfect 5.1 to MS Word v7.0, you will need to Insert the WordPerfect file into a new Word document. Then save the file in Word with the .doc extension.

Following are the step by step instructions:

  1. Start MS Word. A new document will be active.
  2. Select Insert from the Menu Bar
  3. Click File
  4. Change the folder in the Look in box to the WP51FILE folder by clicking on the drop down list and browsing to the C: drive, then double click on the WP51FILE folder
  5. Next, change the file type to *.* All files (this is located at the bottom of the dialog box)
  6. Then select the file that you want to convert to Word
  7. Click OK
  8. Then the WP51 file is now in Word
  9. Click File, Save As
  10. Change the folder to save the new file in "My Documents" (Do this by selecting the folder from the Look In box)
  11. Name the file. Word will automatically add the .doc extension

You still have the original file in the original location and a new file that is a Word document in the "My Documents" folder.
