How to Convert a file from Supercalc 4 to Access for Office 97
Step 1: Export a SuperCalc 4 File for Office 97
- Start Supercalc 4, open your address file.
- In the first row of your data file, you have headings. Make sure headings are one word, less than ten characters in length and has no periods or slashes in the name.
- In Supercalc 4, Export your address file to a Comma Seperated Value file. Use the commands //E for export, then c for CSV. When prompted for the filename enter c:\sc4\filename.csv (you can press enter to accept the default name and extension).
- Quit Supercalc.
Step 2: Create an Access Database for Addresses
- Click Start, MS Office, Access.
- To create a new database, choose "blank database".
- At the prompt, type a filename. For example, use a general name like the filename "Addresses" and the folder location is "My Documents" (you may change the folder location by changing the folder listed in the "Look-in" box.)
- Click Create.
Step 3: Import data as a new Table in Access - Office 97
Note: An Access database can have several tables in a single database file.
- To import the csv file as a new table, click on the Table tab, then click on the File menu, Get External data, Import.
- At the Open dialog box, change the Files of Type to Text files (*.txt, *.asc, *.csv).
- Change the "Look-in" box to the C: drive then double-click the SC4 folder.
- Select the file filename.csv
- Click Import.
- Next you will see the Import Wizard. Click Next.
- Check the box for "First Row Contains Field Names". Click Next.
- Click Finish.
- You will be given the prompt of a successful import, Click OK
- Click Close (unless you have more tables to import).
- You will then see the list of tables available in your database.
- Note: One SuperCalc file is now one table in the Address Database, you can add more tables (old Supercalc files) to the same database.
