Netscape
Netscape Communicator is a comprehensive set of components that integrates browsing,
email, web-based word processing, chat, and group scheduling to allow users to easily communicate,
share, and access information. Each new version of Netscape Communicator includes fixes to several
important problems with earlier versions of Communicator as well as adding new features and support
for new technologies. This is why it is important for you to continually upgrade to the latest version
of the program. You can download the latest version of Netscape from the
ACES FTP server, the
Netscape website
or use the latest version of the ACES Master Utilities CD.

Netscape Communicator 4.x
Netscape 6.x
Netscape 6.x is not an upgrade for the previous versions of Netscape. It is a completly separate
package of software. Although this package contains software that does everything that earlier
versions of Netscape did (web browser, email, composer, etc.), it has many new features and the
code it is written in is not based on the previous versions of Netscape software. The result of this
is that it handles new types of code such as DHTML and XML much more easily than previous versions of
Netscape. This is why they named it Netscape 6.x instead of Netscape 5. This was an attempt to set it
apart from previous Netscape packages. You will see improved performance in processing pages that
use these as well as more cross-browser compatability as it is set up to interpret much of Microsoft's
proprietary, non-NCSA standard, code.
