County Staff Photos
The images of the county office staff that appear on the county web pages and on the ACES main page
must be sized to 200 pixels X 135 pixels in order to fit into the established page layouts.
It is also imperative that the image files be named using the county name with the first letter
capitalized and the capitalized ".JPG" file extension, then stored in the "pic" directory in your
county's web directory. To update your county's staff photo, crop and edit the image to the appropriate
size in your image editing program and save them with the appropriate name such as "Lee.JPG" or
"Jefferson.JPG". When you upload this file to your county's "pic" directory it should have exactly
the same name as the old image and will overwrite the old file. It is not necessary to change any
HTML in your page, however, you may need to hit the "Reload" button in your browser in order to see
the updated image. For more information on how to use your image editing program see the
Graphics section of the Technology Reference Desk.
When taking the photograph that will be used for your county's staff photo on the web, there are
several things to bare in mind. The first thing to consider is that the image will have to be
sized to 200px X 135px. So, you should think about the relationship of that width to height.
This is called the aspect ratio. It simply means that with this height and this width you will
have a certain shape of rectangle. The rectangle for this image will be similar in shape to your
computer screen. If the image you take of your county staff is composed in a long narrow horizontal
or vertical format, the image may not fill the rectangle. This means that the rest of the rectangle
will have to be filled with a solid background color. It also means that the people will be smaller
than necessary in order to get them all to fit. For example:

You also want to remember that these images will be displayed very small and at low resolution (72dpi)
on a web page. So, you want the picture to focus on the people in image, not any extraneous
information, such as signs, that will be too small to recognize anyway. There is no need to include
the sign of your county office in the picture because the Extension logo and the name of your county
office will be displayed much larger and legibly on your county's homepage and on the ACES homepage
along with your photo. Your photo will also look better if the background behind the people is solid.
A cluttered, multicolor background behind the people will make it more difficult to distinguish the
individuals in the picture.
If you would like to build an additional page for your county's website that includes a larger
version of your staff photo and perhaps the names of the staff members, you may do so. However,
this would be in addition to and not in place of the 200px X 135px copy of the staff photo and, of
course, the large version would have to have a different name. For an example of this see the
Cullman County homepage. The names of the people could
also be linked to email or a separate page with information about each individual.
