Active Directory is a hierarchical collection of network resources that can contain users, computers, printers, and other Active Directories. Active Directory Services (ADS) allow administrators to handle and maintain all network resources from a single location. Active Directory is a new feature in Windows 2000 and XP, and is not available to Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT 4.0, Mac OS, or Unix client software.
Specifically, Active Directory provides users and administrators with the following options:
- Authentication based on AU username.
- requiring AU username and password for login
- allowing Auburn users the flexibility of logging into any Auburn machine securely
- ability to restrict access to machines by certain users
- Structured policy settings (rules) that can be used for:
- automating Windows updates and other patches
- setting and locking security configurations
- making software available via "Add/Remove Programs"
- automatically mapping network drives
- providing granular management of sub-groups, such as labs and workgroups
- Secure file sharing between Window's XP PC's.
- use of encrypted passwords to prevent mishandling of confidential information
- improved "search" method for finding computer shares in the Auburn domain
- Easier Printer Sharing.
- printers appear automatically under "Printers and Faxes tab."
- ability to print to any printer within the Auburn domain no matter the physical location
