To load a Sun Raster file (created from Snapshot, for example) into Island Paint (available only on the SPARCstations) and make changes you should -- 1) Start Paint 2) Choose "Convert" under the "File" menu of Paint - a new window labelled "convert" should appear. 3) Set the proper path and filename in the convert window. Choose "open and convert" and set the filetype to convert *from* to be "Sun Raster" 4) Press the "Convert" button at the bottom of the window. 5) The map should appear in the main editing window. Notes about files and filenames: 1) The amount of public access clipart on the network should grow rapidly so we plan to try to keep some standards. It is located in a directory called /public/clipart. 2) Name your files so that the file type is easy to figure out. For example, a file saved as a postscript file might be "stinkbug.ps". Other filetypes may be "stinkbug.IP" for Island Paint, "stinkbug.rs" for raster ("Sun Raster" technically), or "stinkbug.gif" for the GIF file type. 3) If you create or get clipart that might be useful to anyone else on ACENET, please notify the system administrator, the gopher administrator, or the WWW administrator that you wish to contribute to the clipart directory and we will be happy to include your submissions. The E-Mail addresses for the above are "dearabby", "gopher-admin", and "webmaster", respectively. 4) Right now things are just being organized so please offer suggestions where applicable. I have just created a directory under /public/clipart called "maps" with various Alabama state maps in it. I also created a file there called "CONTENTS.README". This file contains a brief description of the drawings in the directory. If this is helpful we can create one for each clipart directory and allow the users to update the file as they put drawings in the specific directory. The file can be edited with "vi" (for UNIX idiots like me) or "pico.
