Pine is an electronic mail interface that allows the user to easily compose, print, and reply to e-mail messages. Rather than downloading all e-mail messages and printing them from WordPerfect or WordStar, we (CTU) now strongly suggest that you print your e-mail from the Pine interface. This short guide will give you instructions on printing, deleting, composing, forwarding, and replying to e-mail messages. At the e-mail menu, the first option is the Pine interface. The Pine Main Menu gives you the choice of composing (C) messages, viewing the Index (I), viewing a folder (L), or quitting Pine (Q). The Index (I) option will display a chronological list of your current e-mail messages. At the Index, you can read, delete, print, and reply to any message. Use the cursor control keys (arrows) to highlight a particular message in the Index list. To read the message, press the key. You can print and delete a message either while reading it or by highlighting it in the Index list. To print the message, press a Y, and answer Yes to the "print to ansi?" question. To delete a message, press a D. This will mark the message for deletion and will automatically move to the next message. Messages marked for deletion will be removed when you quit Pine. You can also reply to any message by pressing an R either while reading the message or by highlighting it in the Index list. You will be given the choice of including the original message in your reply, and you will also be given the choice of responding to only the sender or to all recipients. To return to the Index from reading a message, type an I, and to move to the next message, type an N. You can quit Pine by typing a Q. When you are replying to (or composing) a message, add users to the TO: list by separating users (or aliases) with a comma. The attachment part of the header is for "attaching" files to the message. Within the message while replying (or composing), make deletions by using the backspace key or Ctrl-K to delete lines or blocks. Check the spelling by using the Ctrl-T at the beginning of the message. Send the message by typing Ctrl-X. When quitting Pine, answer Yes to "expunge messages?" for Pine to remove the messages you marked for deletion. Keep in mind that your options on each menu are displayed at the bottom of each screen. CONTEXT SENSITIVE HELP IS AVAILABLE ON EACH SCREEN BY PRESSING THE QUESTION MARK (?) (press Ctrl-G for help in the Compose screen). We hope presenting these basic keystrokes will assist you in using and learning Pine. More detailed documentation will be available in the future as needed.
