Abstract: The 1995 Pecan Production Survey conducted by The Alabama Agricultural Statistics Service included 40% of the 27,000 acres currently grown in Alabama. Data collected included tree age, trees per acre and irrigation parameters. Management practices were delineated which included fertility, weed control, insect and mite, and disease control programs. Where pesticides were used, growers reported rates, methods, and times applied. The disease control program also included times of application, i.e. pre and post pollination for pecans.

There were 10,700 acres of pecan trees represented in the survey.

The total current acreage estimate is 26,036 acres.

There are 2,343 acres of trees less than 10 years old.
The top three varieties in this age category are:
Cape Fear
Stuart
Desirable

The top three varieties for trees more than 10 years old are:
Stuart
Seedlings
Cape Fear

There are currently less than 500 acres of the Pecan trees in Alabama that are less than five years old.

Tree spacing has changed from the census report conducted in 1992 of 16 trees per acre to a current 23 trees per acre on surveyed acreage.

There were 11% or 2,864 surveyed acres irrigated in 1995 with 15% of acreage with irrigation capability.

A total of 83% of the pecan acreage surveyed received regular care and maintenance in 1995.

A total of 68% of the acreage surveyed received nitrogen fertilizer application.

There was a total of 40% of surveyed acreage that was treated with herbicide in 1995.
