Winter annual or biennial with erect, robust stems from fleshy taproot.

Leaves alternate, smooth, dark green with light green midrib and a whitish
margin.

Leaves are deeply dissected, each lobe having one to five spines at the
tip.

Flowers are pink to purple, occasionally yellow, in large terminal, spiny
head.

Reproduces by seed.

Seeds have tufts of soft white hairs at the tips that disperse in the spring.

Found occassionally in lawns but more common in fields, pastures, and along
roadsides.

* Use lower rates on centipede

Do not use within the root zone of desirable plants, especially dicamba.
