Common Lawn Weeds

Thistle

  • Winter annual or biennial with erect, robust stems from fleshy taproot.
  • Leaves alternate, smooth, dark green with light green midrib and a whitish margin.
  • Leaves are deeply dissected, each lobe having one to five spines at the tip.
  • Flowers are pink to purple, occasionally yellow, in large terminal, spiny head.
  • Reproduces by seed.
  • Seeds have tufts of soft white hairs at the tips that disperse in the spring.
  • Found occassionally in lawns but more common in fields, pastures, and along roadsides.
Control Methods
  • Hand Removal or Hoeing
  • Herbicides:
    • Preemergence - NONE
     
    • Postemergence - 2,4-D* or combination product.


    * Use lower rates on centipede and St. Augustine grass.  See label for appropriate
       turfgrass.   Do not use within the root zone of desirable plants, especially dicamba.
